Staying on Track

Staying on Track (SoT) is an early intervention program for young people in, and after youth detention, preparing them for a successful transition back into the community.

Helping young people stay on track

Delivered in partnership with Goolburri Aboriginal Health Advancement Co Ltd in Toowoomba, and funded by the Queensland Government, the Staying on Track (SoT) Program provides tailored support to young people from the moment they enter detention, continuing for up to 12 months after their release. SoT focuses on early engagement, mentoring, and practical assistance, ensuring collaboration with Youth Justice, families, and care teams to meet the goals within each young person’s Service Response Plan (SRP).

Key features of the program include:

  • Early engagement with young people and their families while in detention, preparing for a successful transition back into the community.
  • A strong emphasis on cultural safety, guided by OzChild’s National Practice Framework and Goolburri’s Cultural Framework.
  • Intensive supervision and support in the first six months after release, delivered in partnership with Youth Justice and community case workers.
  • Ongoing mentoring, social, and practical support for up to 12 months post-release, with a focus on education, employment, housing, health and cultural connection.

Our approach

Youth offenders will be partnered with a personal mentor and receive tailored, high-intensity support to assist the transition back into the community and reduce the risk of re-offending.  SoT assesses the strengths of the young person and the systems and networks they operate within, identifying areas in need of support. This includes:

  • Family: Strengthening families’ understanding and response to the young person’s offending behaviour.
  • Peers: Fostering positive peer mentors.
  • School/ Employment: Promoting access to school, training and employment by removing barriers to engagement.
  • Culture: Ensuring connection to culture and culturally responsive supports.
  • Community: Facilitating access to community supports and prosocial activities.
