Kinship Carers Week 2023

This year, Kinship Carers Week runs from 4 to 8 September.

Every day is a day to be thankful for all our carers but this week is dedicated to celebrating the unique role kinship carers play and honour their contribution in Australian communities.

We use this time to reflect on and celebrate the valuable teachings of kindship carers in their generosity and strength looking after children and young people.

Many kinship carers often step into the role when there is hardship and challenges in a family network that mean children and young children can’t live with their parents. They do so, determined to ensure children stay close to kin and keep the connection to self and culture strong. This is often at great personal sacrifice for the carer but done out of compassion for their relatives.

We also recognise the work of the agencies, programs and support services that keep kinship care an available option. With these resources, carers can keep doing what they do best, knowing they aren’t alone and without assistance when they need it.

The OzChild team extends our sincerest thanks to every kinship carer in Australia for your commitment, compassion and hard work in caring for children and young people.
