Every year, OzChild honours the legacy of Elizabeth Tudor, a woman whose quiet determination and compassion changed countless lives, by recognising a foster carer who embodies her spirit. This year, that honour goes to Loretta Johnston, whose story is a testament to resilience, advocacy and the power of care.
Loretta Johnston’s journey as a foster carer began in 2021, when after several short placements, she opened her home to two boys, aged 12 and 7, both facing significant trauma and challenges. As a special development school teacher, Loretta brought not only her professional expertise but also a warmth and structure that helped the boys feel safe and supported. She navigated the complexities of foster care during the COVID lockdowns as a sole carer and worked tirelessly to ensure the boys received the diagnoses and support they needed.
Over the past few years, Loretta’s personal resilience and dedication as a carer have never faltered, despite some significant life challenges and milestones – including marriage to husband, Jubail, and the birth of their child. Together, Loretta and Jubail have provided a loving, consistent environment, allowing the boys to forge a positive, sibling‑like bond.
Loretta has amplified the boys’ voices in every forum, including advocating for one child’s reunification with his aunt – supporting both the child and his family through the transition and continuing to offer guidance and respite. For the other, she has committed to long-term care, giving him stability, belonging, and a foundation for the future.
Those who know Loretta describe her as positive, reliable and deeply empathetic. She balances emotional support with structure, and is incredibly humble – seeking no recognition for her efforts. Yet, in just a few years, she has made a remarkable difference and has changed the trajectory of two young lives.
