2023 JC BUTLER AWARD WINNER – Renee Faure

The JC Butler award recognises Renee Faure as this year’s recipient for her outstanding work in caring and supporting her nephews as their kinship carer.

With three children of her own, Renee couldn’t imagine a home where she wouldn’t have her nephews with her, as they are a part of the family. While there are challenges at times, Renee has always been proactive in nurturing and encouraging them while ensuring they get the assistance they need to thrive at school.

Those who know Renee describe her as having a heart of gold. She is an advocate for her nephews in all aspects of their life, ensuring they are given the same opportunities as other young people and never go without.  

Case worker and nominator Tara reflected on Renee’s dedication;

“Renee is a selfless carer, the love and support that she provides the boys is immeasurable. Renee sees herself caring for her nephews until they turn 18 years old and beyond. I feel blessed to have met someone like Renee and I can’t fault the care she provides the boys with.”

This award acknowledges the role of our kinship carers in the spirit of JC Butler, a founding father of OzChild.

JC was very concerned for the changing social mores in Victoria in the 1920’s and could see the breakdown of families, not just poverty, was creating a new cohort of children in need.

Understanding the power of family, he lobbied hard to support the establishment of the widow’s pension so mothers could afford to keep children in the home.

The spirit of JC Butler lives on through the work of our organisation and through the wonderful work of our kinship carers. This award recognises a kinship carer who makes sure through their personal effort that kith and kin can be cared for by those closest to them.
